Agriculture and organic farming

Shells are traditionally used as soil improvers in agriculture and organic farming. The limestone naturally contained in shells is gradually absorbed into the soil. Seashell limestone is necessary as plant food. All plants need a certain amount of limestone. Sugar beets, for instance, thrive on limestone.

Limestone is a substance that regulates the soil’s environment. As well as being a major nutrient, calcium is also important for improving soil structure, especially in heavier soils. Good calcium levels and a good pH (natural acidity) promote the working of artificial fertiliser added to the soil as well as organic manure.
